Tekoa Foothills Skills Guide

Many children have spent their summers at day and sleepaway camps, trying new activities such as swimming, hiking, and sports. However, many families may be unaware that camp provides children with a variety of opportunities to learn important life skills that are difficult to obtain in any other environment.

In this blog, we will explain the skills and benefits that your children will gain from the summer camp experience.

Why Should My Child Attend Summer Camp?

1. Campers Obtain Life Skills

At camp, children learn valuable life skills. In fact, there is a large gap between students in school and the skills they need to be successful in society. These skills are necessary for communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership, socialization, and problem-solving.

During camp, campers communicate with each other, learn to work together as a team, and navigate how to solve problems by themselves, along with practicing in many creative outlets.

2. Camp Is Educational

Camp is one of the best educational environments, and it may help children develop social skills. It gives children the opportunity to try new things by participating in fun activities.

Being part of a supportive community and participating in activities together also helps children develop social and problem-solving abilities. Every day, campers are challenged and encouraged to improve.

3. Camp Allows Kids to Unplug from Technology

Children today spend more than 7.5 hours per day interacting with technology, which frequently replaces important hands-on activities and socialization opportunities. Most summer camps prohibit the use of most technology, including television, smartphones, tablets, and personal computers.

4. Camp Promoted Independence

When children attend camp, they are given the opportunity to become more independent. Separation from one's parents, whether for a day or the entire summer, allows a camper to learn to rely on himself as well as other trusted adults and peers. Separation from parents teaches a child to think independently, which builds self-esteem.

What Skills Does Your Child Learn from Summer Camp?

1. Teamwork

Teamwork is a part of some school activities, and you can teach it to your child at home, but camp takes it to a whole new level. At camp, children will quickly learn how to build teamwork while having fun.

2. Leadership

Camp teaches your child self-leadership since they will be responsible for basic tasks like waking up on time, keeping their cabin clean, and adhering to their schedule. Older kids who attend apprentice counseling training develop their leadership skills further and have many opportunities to put newly developed leadership skills to use.

3. Sportsmanship

Your child will learn sportsmanship at summer camp. Whether your child is playing games, learning to cook, or participating in an outdoor activity, they are taught to be fair and kind to others. Your child will benefit from sportsmanship in school, work, and friendships throughout their adulthood.

4. Decision-Making

Summer camp is a great experience for teaching kids independence and making well-formed decisions. Camp is a structured environment with options and helps kids understand the situation and learn consequences in safe surroundings.

5. Courage

It’s not easy for children or their parents when it’s time to go to summer camp for the first time. However, at camp, children learn so much about their own talents. Children will have several opportunities to explore new things and make new friends.

What Is Tekoa Foothills Summer Camp?

Tekoa Foothills is a Summer Camp and Retreat Center located in Casar, NC. We offer three different camps: Day Camps, Resident Camps, & Tekoa Missions. At camp, your child will experience fun activities and have the opportunity to learn a new skill throughout their camp session. Each camper will be assigned a Family Group as well as a Skill Group.

Family Groups are formed by grouping campers according to their ages, while Skill Groups are formed based on camper registration and interest. This allows children to make meaningful connections with other campers outside of their assigned Family Group while also learning a new skill in a safe environment.
